Dalesburg Scandinavian Association’s

Pea Soup and Pancake Luncheon

Ärtsoppa och Pannkakor

Yellow Pea Soup and Crepe Pancakes

Saturday, April 6, 2002

Reservations Required.

Guest Speaker:

Rev. Daniel Peter Brown

from St. Helena, Nebraska

former resident of Riverside Township, Clay County.

The Swedish custom of eating pea soup and pancakes on Thursdays had its beginning before the Reformation when Sweden was a Catholic country.  Being that people were not allowed to eat meat on Fridays, they would gorge themselves on ärter och fläsk (pea soup and pork).  This was done in order to fortify themselves against the meager fare on Fridays.  Pancakes for dessert were the traditional accompaniment.  (from Var Så God, cookbook of the American Swedish Institute (Christine Carlson)).

Any Ideas….

Dalesburg Scandinavian Association is celebrating its 25th Birthday in 2002.  Any suggestions or ideas for ways to celebrate this milestone would be appreciated.  Contact Carol Shubeck or Ron Johnson.

Congratulations!!!

Congratulations to the Bylanders on the listing of the Bylander-Messler Homestead on the National Register of Historic Places of the National Park Service, U.S. Dept. of Interior.  It was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places because of its role in agriculture, homesteading and architecture.  It is an excellent example of a Swedish farmstead building in styles that are rarely found outside of Swedish communities.  (South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office)

RECRUITING…

The Clay County Historic Preservation Commission is looking for individuals to serve on the Commission.  The Commission works to promote and preserve the historical, architectural, archeological, paleontological and cultural heritage of Clay County.  If you would like more information, please contact Ron Johnson.
